Experts Gone South

The war in the South really is a huge mystery to all who report on it. There are plenty of Muslims in the army, the South voted overwhelmingly for the 2007 constitution and we Bangkokians really love their funny hats and spicy food. Here, we speak to a professor from Thammalongkorn (Silom Campus) to find out more.Ajarn Siriporn Boonsirimongkolsiriporn, why are Southern gangsters blowing stuff up?It’s not political. Granted, Bangkok has Terminal 21 and Mega Bangna, and all Hat Yai has is stinky sataw beans.

Back to the Future

You’re holding the first issue of BK Magazine to be simultaneously available in print and as a free downloadable digital iPad version, with a bunch of added multimedia, such as a video of us reading Page 3 with balaclava masks on, in the dark, with the camera’s microphone set to mute. We don’t have as many fans as those fundamentalist Christian filmmakers but we’d still like to play it safe.In fact, this is an exciting digital time for all of Thailand. Today, the NBTC is accepting applications for the Oct 16 3G license auction.

Winning Laughs

We’re so excited that season 2 of Super Guber is coming soon, we’re like a pack of toy dogs defecating on some community mall AstroTurf. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Super Guber is the multi-award-winning TV series about a suave, slightly chubby-cheeked man, campaigning for election in the city of Bangkok. First aired in 2008-2009, we feared season 2 had been shelved, but it’s back this month, with the grand finale scheduled to air Jan 2013.

New news is good news

Hi! We’re here to milk the Ferrari crash for just one more week. Oh come on, it’s not old news just yet. They’re coming up with new stuff every day. First it was a hit and run. (Well, that’s just how we do things in Thailand.) Then they said he was drunk. (Who isn’t at 5am on a Monday?) Then Vorayuth and the mom went to the funeral. (Nice glasses. Prada?) Then they said he was speeding at 200kph. (Holy crap! In a soi that small? Italian engineering is really quite something.)But, seriously, this story is getting stale as fast as a patongko.

Drawing a Blanc

A short, counterfactual history of why white just won’t wash here.29 January 1819. Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles lands on a muddy river bank in Southeast Asia. Wading ashore (even back then it was widely known that white men can’t jump), he claims the territory as a new trading outpost for the British Empire. His pronouncements are met with derision by the local populace who doubt that somehow so pale could ever succeed under the sticky Singaporean sun.

Old jokes home

So did you hear the one about the finance minister who goes to a massage parlor? He tells the girl it will only take a minute. After it’s over, 60 seconds later, the masseuse looks disappointed and confused. “What? I told you it would only take a minute,” says the minister. “Exactly,” says the girl. “It’s just I didn’t think there was such a thing as an honest politician.”Shit. That’s not it. She says, “Wow, you must be a democrat.” No, damn, that’s not it either. The girl says, “Market confidence is a bit like nuclear deterrence.
