Singapore Island Culture Club with Aldrin (Aug 1)

Hip party planners Singapore Island Culture Club return with the National Day edition of one of their intimate soirees. This time, a collaboration with the Desperados beer people means that the first 100 people on the guestlist get a complimentary drink to swig while grooving to tunes by Singapore's proud export, DJ Aldrin.

Celebrity Chef Dine Around (Aug 1)

Part of the Singapore Food Festival, the integrated resort rolls out a conceptual one-night only roving dinner that features three celebrity chef restaurants. This wine and dine event has dishes prepared by CUT by Wolfgang Puck, db Bistro Moderne, as well as Pizzeria and Osteria Mozza. Rounding off the experience is dessert served at The Cheese and Chocolate Bar at the Sands SkyPark. Although it may be pricey, all proceeds go to the Singapore Association of the Deaf.

As usual, they have great F&B partners to save you the trouble of assembling your own gourmet picnic basket (ain't nobody got time for that); this time the food is care of My Private Chef and Jones the Grocer, plus there's going to be a boutique wine bar on site.

Jazz by the Beach (Aug 1-29)

Coastes's well-loved series is back with a lineup of performances by local jazz artists the Steve McQueens (Aug 1), Men In Groove (Aug 8), Indigo (Aug 15), Chronicles 5 (Aug 22) and Stephen Francis & Friends (Aug 29).

A Drawing Show (Aug 1-Sep 14)

Drawing gets serious with this sketch-centric exhibition featuring artists from Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Pop down and catch a two-man sketch-off performance on opening night (Aug 1) or the public talk "Drawing in Contemporary Singapore" (Aug 23). 

Utter 2014 (Aug 3, 6)

The Singapore Writers Festival initiative returns this year with four short films adapted from Singaporean short stories. Among other works, watch award-winning director Sanif Olek's film Tin Kosong as he portrays a tin picker's relationship with the people he meets on his job, and At Your Doorstep, based on popular writer Kamaladevi Aravindhan's original work about a widowed woman suffering from chronic loneliness. 

Singaporean Talents: A Celebration (Aug 4-Sep 27)

For National Day this year, Galerie Belvedere exhibits an array of local painters and artists, ranging from pioneering artists Sarkasi Said and Chew Wen Hsi to newer faces in visual arts, like multi-hyphenate Dick Lee.

The 10th anniversary edition of this circus-inspired production (sometimes described as "Cirque du Solei on horseback") combines equestrian arts, acrobatics, dance, live music, multimedia and special effects. Yes, there will be real horses cavorting around in an actual big top tent.

Give Me Your Blood and I Will Give You Freedom (Aug 15)

Nikhil Chopra manipulates white canvas and black ink in a 50-hour performance art piece/live installation, an abstract sequence about India's fight to free itself from colonial rule. Audiences are encouraged to leave and revisit the installation to enjoy its progress over time.

Bang Bang (TBC)

We have high expectations for this new club that's taking over hot nightlife spots Mink and Royal Room, both of which closed way back in May. Touted to be designed for the "savvy and sophisticated", the place is currently slated to open its doors to the public come August. Watch this space for more updates.
