The House of Siren will be hosting a Kiki Ball, part of an underground subculture event embracing and showcasing queer talent in a safe space, this Saturday Apr 6, 3-11pm. The event, called the Myxtery Kiki Ball, will feature competition categories like voguing, waacking, runway and more.

It will be judged by a panel from abroad, but you don’t have to compete to attend. Join the ball at Myx Studio and dress for the ‘chromatic effect’ theme, silver and reflective rainbow-colored garbs all pass the vibe check.

For a brief history lesson, Ballroom originates from African-American and latino LGBTQ+ subculture from the mid 20th century. It is an escape from societal bigotry—where queer people can express themselves, battle it out in challenges, and celebrate one another. The ballroom community evolved into “houses” which are chosen families that form teams in the competition and a support system in day to day life; hence why house founders and more experienced members of the scene earn the title “mother” and “father”.

The culture is represented in mainstream media such as the controversial documentary “Paris is Burning” or the recent hit shows “Pose” (2018-2021) and “Legendary” (2020-2022) on HBO Max. But In Thailand, the scene is still relatively small.

This upcoming Myxtery Kiki Ball includes sections such as runway or ‘the face’ (framing and selling facial features). The performance category voguing is a style of dancing with roots taken from poses seen on fashion magazines, and you can visit the House of Kiki’s Instagram for the full list of categories.

The international list of guest judges includes the Asian Mother Channing Louboutin, a professional Taiwanese dancer predominantly teaching vogue and heels classes in Hong Kong, and Hoody Versace who has been contributing to the growth of Taiwanese ballroom scene for the past seven years and specializes in the runway and vogue femme category. Last but not least is the ex-founder of the Kiki House of Fusion and the first person who introduced ballroom culture to China, Mother Doll 007, who will also be hitting the judge panel.

Whether you’re a dancer, a fashionista, or a partygoer looking for some fun, the Myxtery Kiki Ball will be a little slice of ballroom history.
