SINGAPORE VENUE

Spa Detour

This all-new spa concept includes getting your nails done in a theater and treating yourself to a 30 minute power nap in their zero gravity chair.

The buzz: The folks behind the award-winning Duck & Hippo Tours have come up with an all-new spa concept. Aptly named Spa Detour, it aims to provide a space for people to take a break from their fast-paced urban lives. Located in the revamped Suntec City, it caters to both the working crowd and tourists.

The vibe: Stepping inside, it’s nothing like your regular spa. It's dimly lit, with 12 treatment rooms each with its own distinct look and feel. One features a herd of cows peering down at you another boasts a pop art diva. Spa Detour avoids the usual serene spa cliches in favor of a cool, urban vibe, what with its raw concrete floors (marked out with yellow arrows and parallel lines) and its brick walls. There’s also a large illuminated sign overhead that reminds you to “Live Life”.

The goods: We’re talking about getting massages in a barn-inspired setting, getting your nails done (from $17) in a theater (tip: first one in gets to pick the movie) or enjoying a sleep spa on a “zero-gravity” bed ($27) down a rabbit hole. We were skeptical at first too but our eyelids started getting heavy a minute after climbing aboard the zero gravity bed that consists of four fully adjustable sections. We can see why it’s popular with the office crowd. Massage wise, our massage therapist was attentive and got us feeling fully relaxed. Also on offer are facials ($117), body scrubs ($73), waxing ($23) and foot reflexology ($47).

Why you’ll be back: It is an unusual experience for sure. They might have thrown us off with their over-the-top décor initially but quickly won us over with their service and treatments. Plus, we can’t get enough of that “zero-gravity” chair.
