Senor Taco

We’re not massive fans of CHIJMES—too touristy for our liking—but we’re suckers for Mexican food and figured Señor Taco’s refreshed menu and recently launched Cerveza Habanero ($11.90/pint), a limited-edition wheat beer brewed with habanero chilies, was as good a reason as any to make a trip down.

It’s a minimal set-up, just wooden tables and chairs peppered around, although the indoor space has more color with artworks by Mexican artists and a giant TV screen playing Latino music videos.

An order of reliable, if a tad conservative, portion of guacamole ($7.90) disappeared quickly with chips. Be sure to try it with a pint of Cerveza Habanero.

There are better ceviches to be had than the watery, less-than-fresh Ceviche Costeño ($19.90).

And lest you accuse us of not giving you any warning, here it is. The service here needs some serious work. We spent a good 10 minutes talking to a hopelessly clueless server who was set on convincing us that poblanos were actually a kind of chocolate and had to ask three different servers four times before we got a water refill.

The enmoladas ($19.90), fried corn tortillas with chicken and topped with house-made mole and Mexican cheese, is worth a go, but the rump beef cubes of our tacos de bistec ($12.90) proved too dry and plain.

If you’re not fussy about food and happen to be close by, this is a decent spot to get your drink on with friends—their tequila list alone is worth a trip. Just don’t count on the waitstaff being able to help you out.
