SINGAPORE RESTAURANT

Lewin Terrace

A fancy fusion Japanese-French restaurant amid the pretty surrounds of Fort Canning.

Located in a black-and-white house in the leafy heart of Fort Canning, Lewin Terrace is a serious date night spot. Fancy vibes aside, there is an equally fancy food featuring changing seasonal menus that highlight Japanese ingredients with French and Japanese cooking techniques like the Amadai fish, served with black truffle over a Koshihikari rice cake, as well as the reputable Wagyu steak, cooked in Nippon-Rossini style.

The buzz: A new Japanese-French fusion restaurant has taken over the spot where Flutes at the Fort (now located at The National Museum of Singapore) used to stand; situated just behind the Hill Street Fire Station, it aspires to be the new go-to place for romantic dinners, wedding receptions and soppy stuff like that.

The vibe: Fancy—with blinding white walls (typical of a former colonial house) and white tablecloths to match, candlelit table settings, cushioned fabric chairs and parquet flooring—but without being too pretentious. The 82-seater has several seating areas, but the airy alfresco section is, in our opinion, the best spot to opt for. Expect family crowds during lunch (housewives and kids during weekdays) and couples for dinner.

The food: The a la carte and set menus here change often due to the chefs’ reliance on seasonal ingredients. Here you’ll find prettily plated fusion dishes which highlight Japanese ingredients and classic French cooking techniques, like foie gras terrine served with Japanese pickles ($28) and risotto with dashi and hiziki seaweed ($58).

The drinks: Wine lovers, grab the rare chance to try hard-to-find Japanese wines from wineries like Grace and Tsuno (prices range from $100 to $240 per bottle). For wine pairings, consult chief sommelier Daisuke Kawai. If you prefer, go for the signature cocktails like Ringo by the Rock, a vinegar-based blended whiskey mix with green tea liqueur and Vermouth ($28). Lewin Terrace also stocks, among other spirits, Diplomatico rum ($20), another uncommon find in Singapore.

Why you’ll be back: For the ever-changing options on the menu, the trip to this quiet little retreat is worth it. Also, if you’ve a hot date to impress, we don’t see why not.
