SINGAPORE BAR

Club Lava

The buzz: Taking up residence in what used to be Le Baroque, this 300-capacity spot is part of the early wave of a CHIJMES renaissance. Trust us, you’re going to be hearing plenty more from this part of town in the coming months. With a capacity of some 300, there’s potential for it to get pretty lively, though you can always take refuge by going alfresco.

The décor: Blue and pink neon lights dance around the interior, adding color to solid white table tops and plain brown couches—it’s the look interior designers probably call “classic club”.

The food: For a dance spot, there’s a pretty solid variety of cuisines, mostly of the bar bites variety. Entrees range from tandoori chicken kebabs ($27.80) to fajitas (from $18.80) and quesadillas (from $16.80). There’s also pizzas and burgers (from $19.80) and desserts including the signature chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream ($12.80).

The drinks: If you’re someone who finds it hard to make a decision, then you’re fresh out of luck. There’s more than 100 varieties of alcoholic beverages on offer, including all your standards as well as the exclusive-for-about-a-week-elsewhere Absolut Elyx vodka.

The music: Daily live performances by resident band The Vibes, churning out Top 40 and R&B hits with commendable energy from 10:30pm. They even take requests.

The crowd: A post-work corporate crowd, plenty of whom frequented Le Baroque, and lots more folk looking to get drunk and get lucky.

Why you’ll be back: Because CHIJMES is set to be the all-new, not-so-new go-to spot.
