The fourth instalment of the Underworld series sees Kate Beckinsale making a comeback as the vampire Selene. She awakes from cryogenic slumber 12 years after being captured by humans during “The Purge” (a human push to eliminate vampires and Lycans), experiencing bizarre visions that eventually lead her to a young girl only known as Subject 2. The rest of the film revolves around a highly predictable attempt to bring down the Lycans, who are later found to be her actual captors, and... you can probably make out the rest of the story from there.We only watched this movie for Kate Beckinsale, but her performance here isn’t anything to shout about. Even hot-blooded males may find that the presence of the tight-suited, black leather-clad Kate isn’t enough to lift the show. The scriptwriting for this sequel is largely derivative and the plot is stale and straightforward. Conversation is almost non-existent and leaves little room for imagination – all you need is a smart guess to predict the lines.Underworld: Awakening may be in 3D, but it doesn’t make a vast difference to the fight sequences. Though there’s action aplenty—blood-spattering, body-slamming and throat-ripping—to satiate fans of gore, it sticks to the current trend of fight scenes, with hackneyed and unoriginal slowmo scenes borrowed from 300 and everything that’s come since.If you’re looking to while away a little over an hour of your time on a boring weeknight, catch Underworld: Awakening— but only if you have a discount voucher or you’re obsessed with Kate Beckinsale’s hot bod.
