If there’s one word to describe this joint it’d be “surprising”. We were surprised the place was relatively empty at lunch, and even more surprised by the interior. Murky colored walls with high ceilings and glowing, ancient-looking lanterns; the whole place looked like a vampire’s underground lair. Garlic in a vampire’s lair? Really? The service staff looked like they were a little scared of us (yeah we’re vampy that way) but were otherwise attentive and polite. So far, so good. Our next surprise came when we read off an acrylic stand that Mad for Garlic is actually a Korean restaurant and the one we were in was the first that was outside of Korea. When our fresh shrimp and garlic sprouts pasta came, the shrimp still had its shell on it—the Italians would never allow that. On the bright side, the dish wasn’t overtly spicy and was full of flavor. We couldn’t leave without trying their seemingly popular garlic snowing pizza—topped with garlic slices in addition to more shrimp and diced pineapples—on a chewy thin crust. Delicious. Overall, not bad at all for an all garlic place.

Our Policy

Reviews are based on actual visits to the establishments listed, without the knowledge of the restaurants. Reviews are included at the discretion of the editors and are not paid for by the individual restaurants. Opinions expressed here are those of I‑S Magazine and our super‑sneaky team of hungry reviewers. Menus, opening hours and prices change and should be checked. New restaurants are not reviewed within one month of their opening.

Reviews are written from a typical diner’s perspective. A dining experience includes more than just food; ratings are also based on service, atmosphere and fun. Ratings are awarded in accordance with the type of restaurant reviewed, so the city’s best wonton noodle stall could earn a “not to be missed” rating while a fancy French restaurant could be a “forget it.”
