I’m a caffeine nut, but I ventured to try Skinny Pizza’s (#03-04 Wheelock Place, 501 Orchard Rd., 6235-7823) red espresso (caffeinefree rooibos) tea set. The combo includes a buttery brioche, homemade red espresso jam and a rooibos drink ($9.50). I liked the teh latte, made with fresh milk and honey.
If you’re looking for authentic Indonesian fare, head to Concorde’s (4/F Pool, Concorde Hotel Singapore, 100 Orchard Rd., 6733-8855) Buka Puasa buffet dinner by the Pool. Chef William Wongso, who’s cooked for the likes of Hilary Clinton, makes delicious western Sumatran rendang, balado terong (eggplant with red chili salsa) and ayam goreng gurih (fragrant fried chicken). So good it reminded me of the some of the best local food I had during my stint in Jakarta. Feast from $42 (adults) and $20 (children), through Sep 9.
For some redemption, follow The White Rabbit’s (39C Harding Rd., 6473-9965) lead. The good folks, together with Project Happy Feet, are launching a Meal for a Meal campaign. For every four-course set dinner ($98) you consume from Aug 29 through Sep 12, they’ll commit to feeding one underprivileged child at the restaurant.
Don Quijote Spanish Restaurant (#01-02 Blk. 7 Dempsey Rd., 6476-2811) has just rolled out its second outlet. Despite being barely three weeks old, I’m expecting more of the same saffron-scented paella this veteran has become known for. That and lots and lots of sangria. Perhaps I’ll pop by for a siesta, just don’t tell my boss.
Hot on the heels of the Spaniards, and proving that Dempsey’s still a hot piece of property (was there ever any doubt?), is The Disgruntled Chef (26B Dempsey Rd., no phone number yet). Chef Daniel Sia, formerly of The White Rabbit, has slid all the way down the rabbit hole with a restaurant-bar concept that lets you eat the way chefs want to. Slated to open sometime in September, I’m all set to try his camembert fondue, Scotched quail eggs and baked bone marrow.
