During a recent visit to Holland Village, I found a cute little bake shop in the form of PLAINVANILLA; proving beyond a doubt that the cupcake movement is in full swing here (finally!). Unfortunately, they were already sold out for the day, but I've got my eye on flavors like cinnamon brown sugar and dark chocolate ganache (both $3.20). I'm already planning my next trip back to sample their goods.

This is by no means the first reincarnation for the gorgeous Alkaff Mansion; but it's certainly a welcome one. Built as a holiday home by rich Yemeni traders in the 1920s, its most recent occupant was an Indonesian restaurant. But recent is a relative term—the spot has been empty since 2003, when SARS (and falling sales) took its toll. It's a tragedy that such a spot has remained vacant for so long, but better late than never we say.

Occupying a glass-fronted space on the second floor of an otherwise decrepit shopping center, The Steeping Room (#02-30, 261 Waterloo St., 9655-0357) is the latest and -- in our humble opinion -- greatest addition to the city's pop-up scene. It's also reflective of our favorite trend - better and better coffee becoming available in Singapore.
Looking like an overgrown school chemistry experiment, and with nary an espresso in sight, this paean to all things coffee from the folk behind...

I'm no Yogi Bear (although I reckon I'm well on my way, if my growing Buddha belly is anything to go by), but I love them picnics. So I wasn't about to pass up a tasting session at Pique Nique (#B1-01 Ngee Ann City Tower A, 391A Orchard Rd., 6238-6705), despite my schedule already being jam-packed. And boy, was I glad I went.
For those of you who haven't heard about this two-week-old American café yet, it's the first offering from the Sugar Daddy Group, with several more to come in...

While I was wandering around my hood over the weekend, I made a pleasant, new discovery, Hummerstons (#02-14 Robertson Walk, 11 Unity St., 6737-8863/8428-1620). Fine, so it's not even remotely related to a hummer, but on a purely superficial note, it certainly looks promising. The two-week-old eatery features casual American fare and is currently only open for dinner, Tue-Sun, 6pm-midnight. I was already stuffed so I had to pass on a second dinner, but I've added it to my list of late...

One of the fun things about working in media (and the salary sure ain’t among them), is that no-one ever really questions whether you should be in the room. You flash your card, say you’ll be writing about what’s going on, and a surprising number of doors are flung open. Too often, you grab what free food you can and make your escape before the PR machine gets its claws into you. Occasionally though, the experience makes you grateful for the access you have – and forces...

It's official. Tiong Bahru is now the most happening part of town. With 40 Hands having led the charge, Books Actually following suit, and Strangelets opening soon at number 7, Yong Siak Street is fast becoming the des res for all things cool and indie. (Shame about those new HDB towers going up right behind it.) Good news is that the F&B scene is being shaken up too (though we already love the fishball noodles right around the corner at Hua Bee Restaurant (#01-19, 78 Moh Guan Terrace))....
