Mooncakes don’t have to be paired with tea. While that’s certainly the established custom, give wines a go. For some bubbles without the hefty price tag, try a Moscato; we recommend Villa M Moscato ($35.80) from Denise the Wine Shop. The Beam Cellar stocks Elderton’s 2007 Riverina Botrytis Semillon ($26) which has honeyed apricot and peach notes, balanced by a subtle acidity that would suit the fruitier mooncakes. Asian flavors are surprisingly well matched with Choya wine (from ThreeSixty Market Place); we like original or extra shiso (perilla) at $40.20 and $44.15 respectively. If you’re feeling truly anti-establishment, get yourself a bottle of lightly sparkling Rosemount O ($45, also from ThreeSixty Market Place). This Australian wine is actually made to be drunk on the rocks (take that you wine snobs!).
