SINGAPORE BAR

Kyo

The buzz: The Vault’s scene-savvy team has opened a new club on Cecil Street, delivering a dose of instant coolness to the suited-up business district.

The décor: It’s literally an underground club—entry is by way of a dramatic stairwell. Designed by Fuur Associates, the 6,000 sq. ft. play-den is where modern minimalism meets traditional Japanese influences, with plenty of rough-hewn stone, bronze and recycled wood. It’s a versatile space, with plush sofas for group revelry alongside more intimate nooks, plus ample space for that intoxicated mingling that’s so essential to a good night out. Best of all, there’s an actual dancefloor.

The drinks: Drinks start at $14 nett for housepours, while refined palates can go for Champagne from $168/bottle. We say skip those, though—you’ll want to go for the more unusual Japanese whiskeys (from $280/bottle) and sakes (from $50/bottle).

The food: Together with consultant Kilo, they're offering food that's a step above typical bar grub. Think BBQ pork rib-lets ($20), and seared scallops ($24).

The music: Each weeknight’s playlist features a distinct genre and mood, but the music is reliably tasteful and sophisticated, thanks to the musical pedigree of the roster of a dozen resident DJs. Watch out for special guests on their cutting-edge Saturday night.

The crowd: Suits, of course, but very nicely put-together ones. People who know and care about what they’re consuming, both music- and alcohol-wise, but aren’t too hip to dance. And some very good lookers.

Why you’ll be back: It reminds us of Velvet Underground in its heyday. With many clubs opting to maximize revenue from commercial fare rather than splurge on quality music, we hope that this place will live up to its potential.
