The S-Man Cometh
I-S has a nice chat with house music’s tough guy.

By Zaki Jufri | published Mar 13, 2008

One of the most prolific house DJs around, Roger Sanchez has really been rocking the scene with his productions and remixes of late. His stellar reputation as a DJ, producer, programmer and songwriter is a testament to his strong belief in the power of music to liberate people, physically and mentally so much so that his Release Yourself parties and productions have become the stuff of legends. So without much further ado, the S-Man speaks.

Everybody wants a piece of you. How does that feel?
It’s good to be wanted!

How do you see today’s house music scene?
I definitely have a more global view of house since I travel the world. House is always changing and incorporating different musical genres and cultures, so I would say it’s more diverse than ever.

Your style is easily discernable. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Much of my inspiration is from the different places I go to, as well as the music I get from all over the world.

You released a Choice album last year. How do you feel about being asked to do a Choice album? Was it easy choosing the right tracks to go in there?
That was a challenging album as it is always difficult to narrow down just a few of the tracks that were important to me coming up, but I did enjoy it!

In recent years you’ve toured around the world DJing and spreading your vibe: What did you learn and absorb from such a worldwide experience?
Music has the ability to bring people from all over the world together and I love being able to be someone on the forefront of the scene. I’ve learned much from different people all over the world and incorporate it into my music.

Which tracks have really been doing it for you the past few months in Ibiza and what’s hot in your box right now?
The Toru’s remix of “Ingrosso” and Luke’s track “Be,” Deadmau5’s “Overworked” and an unreleased track I did with Laidback Luke called “The Bounce”.

What’s happening on the Release Yourself front this year? Album number seven perhaps?
I’m working on number seven now, hopefully for a May release.

Which current artists stimulate you the most and how?
I love artists as diverse as Missy Elliot and Lupe Fiasco to Björk and Lily Allen, mostly for their songwriting and clever lyrical approach.

Which artists of the past have influenced and are influencing your music?
Artists like Tito Puente, Donald Byrd, Quincy Jones, Dr Dre, Timbaland and Massive Attack, just to name a few.
