DJ S.P.Y.
Born Carlos Lima, he shot to prominence with his releases on labels like Innerground, Metalheadz, Ram and Soul:R. Before he stomps the ground at Home Club, Zul Andra checks in on the elusive jock.
I started deejaying … back in 1988 when I was 12 years old.
I went from DJ to a graphic designer and back to a DJ because … I was in love with the music and was passionate for the scene. But working as a graphic designer really helped me to develop my creative side.
The name S.P.Y came from … a name change I made when I had my first track signed to a record label for legal reasons. My original DJ name was SPYDER but there was already an American producer with that name.
Working with DJ Marky … was a really good experience. His knowledge of music is amazing and it’s always fun and easy to work with him in the studio.
I’m into drum ’n’ bass because … of the rhythm, energy and because it is such a forward thinking genre.
Music is … the way I can express myself. Each track tells a different story and forms a different shape and mood.
I use influences from … cinematic sound effects, film scores, classical music, techno, soul and funk.
The difference between drum ’n’ bass in Brazil and the UK is … not that great, except that the scene is so much bigger in the UK. Both countries love a good track.
My idea of a perfect night is when … everyone is happy and having a good time.
Current I’m working on … two album projects; my solo album to be released next year and the other is a project together with DJ Marky. We are contemplating doing a live P.A. set as well.
In my upcoming gig at Home Club … I will be testing out a few tracks from my forthcoming album. Plus I will be playing a mix of new and classic drum ‘n’ bass tracks.
