MOVIE REVIEW:
Spider Lilies

94 mins | release date Mar 30, 2007
By Jorie Phey | published Mar 30, 2007

Director Zero Chou’s outing is about some girl on girl action between web cam girl Jade (Rainie Yang, Merry-Go-Round) and tattoo artist Takeko (Isabella Leong, The Knot). Overly ambitious, the film tries so hard to cover so many themes that it masters none, leading to a confusing and immensely unsatisfying watch. By itself, the vision is artfully deciphered with some nice editing and cinematography of Taiwan’s suburban landscape. However the acting by Leong is inadequate and her attempts at seduction are flat and weak. Worse, the chemistry between the two main protagonist, so crucial to the success of this film is poor and unconvincing. Ultimately this film is a third-rate attempting at riding the wave caused by the Brokeback Mountain effect.
