We can all dream. Though membership at one of the city’s country clubs might be out of reach for the most of us, knowing their strengths will help your hold your own if they ever come up in conversation. And if you really are in a position to stump up the membership dues, then it pays to know where to spend your money. With that in mind, we’ve picked four of the best, including one that isn’t such a stretch at all.
Best for sailing: Raffles Marina
Raffles Marina is an ideal site for sailing and racing. Its location ensures that you’ll get to enjoy consistent South-West and North-East winds. There are several programs to choose from if you aspire to get wet—the Fun Races (open to all boats), International Racing Certificate racing (for those who wish to take it to the next level of competition) and One Design racing (where boats of the same design compete with one another). And for novices, Raffles Marina provides courses in power boating, dinghy and boat sailing. Members also get to attend large-scale events where you can enjoy other types of seasports such as water cycling, kayaking and banana boat rides. Individual membership entitles you to full access of clubhouse facilities and costs $107 per month, with a one time joining fee of $8,888.
10 Tuas West Dr., 6861-8000.
Best golf course: Laguna National Country Club
One of Singapore’s leading clubs, Laguna has played host to international events such as the Asian PGA Tour and the Singapore Open. Their state-of-the-art Masters and Classic courses were designed by recognized company Dye Design, and are carefully sculpted to provide strategic and physical challenges for golfers. Both beginner and pro golfers can improve their swing at the Driving Range Golf Academy: Put your putting, chipping and bunkering swings to the test at one of the 70 available bays spread over three levels (non-members pay $6-8.40 for 120 balls). Laguna also organizes golf clinics to help you get better at your game. Torque Golf, located on the second level of the driving range, is open for repairs, re-shafts and alteration of golf equipment. Individual golfing membership costs $120,000 (with a down payment of $32,400), with a monthly fee of $160.50.
11 Laguna Golf Green, 6542-6888.
Best in club spa: The Tanglin Club
The folks at Spa Botanica Tanglin sure know how to indulge the overworked body, with the Spa Botanica Suite (a deluxe room with hydrotherapy facilities, a hot stone spa) and a separate Botanica Nail Spa. We recommend their Traditional Aromatherapy Massage ($97-145), which incorporates elements of Swedish massage, shiatsu and reflexology. Detox your body completely with one of the traditional spa rituals, including the Five Elements Cleansing and Purifying Ritual ($225-530), where the body is cleansed with watercress cleansing milk before warm Tibetan oil is massaged onto the body followed by clay. The Skin Health Series is also available here; it consists of a series of treatments that cleanse and detox the skin using exfoliating scrubs, masks and massage oils, each using a customized mix of ingredients. It costs $30,000 for a regular membership, with a monthly fee of $85.
5 Stevens Rd., 6622-0555.
Best pool: Singapore Recreation Club
Within its colonial-inspired confines lies Singapore’s only heated subterranean pool, which ensures you can swim regardless of the weather. Not only does it provide absolute comfort for avid swimmers, the pool area helps you relax with its rock walls, balmy palms and water features. There are also hot and cold pools for a little water therapy. A regular membership will set you back $160.50 for three months. Members can bring in guests at $5 per person.
