Local artist Jeremy Ramsey has no shortage of memories of life in the East from which to draw. “It is through having lived a life in the sun that has allowed me to paint so vibrantly,” explains the British-born Singapore-based artist who, after carving out a successful career in business, turned to the fine arts 20 years ago and never looked back.
His latest solo exhibition KHROMA: Hues of the Subconscious Mind is a culmination of his work spanning some 15 years. “I’m inspired by everyday things," he says. "My art is instinctive and if I am inspired by what I am seeing or doing, I will be there to paint it,” he adds. Emotions and feelings run amok on the canvases resulting in abstract and visceral works like “The Wedding Feast” which features vivacious forms in hues of red—crimson, carmine and cerise among others—evoking images of traditional Chinese wedding dresses, cloth swatches and more. “[My] art is open to interpretation and I enjoy abstract art because there are so many layers to it,” he says.
KHROMA: Hues of the Subconscious Mind is on through Sep 30 at The Gallery, TCC, 51 Circular Rd., 6533-9033. Free.
