“This is home, surely, as my censors tell me,” goes the tweaked version of one of Singapore’s more popular National Day songs. If that got you smirking, you’re definitely going to enjoy this year’s instalment of Singapore’s famed live parody show, Chestnuts. We talk to its affable creator.
Chestnuts has been around since 1996, what’s one of your most unforgettable moments?
It happened at Victoria Theatre in 2009, we were doing a scene from Mamma Mia! involving Meryl Streep’s character, played by me. In that scene, we had to wear many layers of costumes because it was a huge, non-stop kind of thing. The actors who were playing the other two girls in Mamma Mia! were supposed to help strip me out of my overalls to reveal my tacky Abba outfit underneath, but instead of just pulling the outer layer off, they pulled everything off! Most of the audience thought it was intentional!
We heard you’re going to spoof Ris Low’s sister. Who on earth is that?
We’re going to keep her identity a secret for now. But we did a wonderful version of Ris Low last year and you know, she’s funny. We wanted to introduce someone even funnier, hence her sister. She is more “boomz” than Ris Low can ever be.
Why can’t Singaporeans get over Ris Low?
There’s a little bit of Ris Low in all of us. So many of us say the darndest things and I admire her tremendously because she’s not afraid or embarrassed to say them. She’s got to be very positive to not let all the flak get to her.
So do you actually like the people you spoof?
Oh yeah. Over the years, Chestnuts has become something like a tribute. We don't write about the stuff we don’t like and the people we have no respect for. Anyway, in this industry, most of the people we spoof are really our friends, so there’s no way we’re going to spoof them heartlessly. Of course we do poke fun at their occasional lapses in common sense, but we do that because we know they can take a joke.
Don’t miss Chestnuts 3D: Fried Monty aka Nightmare on Glee Street on through Sep 4, 3pm, 8pm. Jubilee Hall, 1 Beach Rd., 6412-1340. $35-50 from Sistic.
