Mr. Bean’s Café & Wine Bar (#01-00, 30 Selegie Rd., 6333-3100)
A great place to chill out with friends while playing cards or watching a soccer match, Mr. Bean’s Café has decent food and an extensive menu of drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. It’s open 24 hours, too.
Night and Day (139 Selegie Rd., 6884-5523)
This beautiful shophouse had its insides turned into a cool bar with stools, an art gallery and a dance floor while still retaining its original façade.
Old School (11B Mount Sophia, 6338-7682)
Art meets design meets food meets live music—Old School is a playground for all things inspiring. There are also restaurants like Timbre and Chalk which are both great places to chill out. The food’s alright but the surroundings are what really make it—high on a hill, especially nice on a balmy night.
Rex Cinema (2 Mackenzie Rd., 6337-6607)
Opened in 1946, by the 80s this lovely building had fallen from grace and was home to a skating rink and nightclub. In recent years it’s been restored and now once again houses a theater that screens the latest song-and-dance flicks from Bollywood.
Sungei Road Thieves Market (Sungei Rd. and Pitt St.)
Old men and their record collections, aviator sunglasses, film cameras from Russia and collections of old tick-tocks laid out on mats for you to trawl through. Bring lots of water and be prepared to sweat.
